Learning about Faith in Jesus
Christianity is focussed on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe to be the Son of God. Jesus was born a Jew in Bethlehem in the Roman province of Palestine over 2,000 years ago.
The Christian holy book is the Bible. The Bible is divided into two main parts: the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament is the story of a nation. The New Testament is the story of a Man and the foundation of the Church. The nation was God’s way of bringing the Man - Jesus Christ - into the world.
Christians believe there is only one God, and that he is revealed in three ways, as:
- God the Father
- God the Son
- God the Holy Spirit
Jesus taught his followers to love God and to love their neighbour as themselves – to do for others as you would have them do for you.
Christians believe that God sent Jesus to live as a man in this world to save humanity from the consequences of sin. Sins are the wrong things humanity has chosen to do which separate us from God.
Jesus was crucified, he died on a cross, and after three days he rose from the dead.
By God's power and justice, by his grace, by the loving kindness and the mercy of God, through the death and resurrection of Jesus our broken relationship with God is restored.
Christians call this the Good News – the Gospel – that Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners, that Jesus lives today, that Jesus wants to be our friend and we can invite him into our lives as friend and Lord and Saviour.
As part of the Diocese of Coventry, at St Mary Magdalene's we share in the Bishop's vision to Worship God, Make New Christians and Transform Communities.
We seek to fulfil this vision in many ways, through a range of services and community activities. Whatever your age or background, we hope to be a place where you can explore faith and find friendship.
You are very welcome to come along to any of our services. If you have questions about Christian faith, and would like to talk to someone, please make contact with the Vicar or any of the clergy.
